BECOME A COYLE OUTSIDE INSTRUCTOR

Message from the Founder

Openings: We run three different Seasonal programs and we are always hiring for at least one of these.  Below you can see videos and descriptions of our Fall/Spring Outdoor School Team work, Summer Camp Instructor work and our year round local Benton County Wilderschool work.  We are always looking to fill these positions with strong candidates, even months in advance.  And we can string together work between these roles to provide 8-9 months of full time work yearly - be in touch at 541-760-0774.

To work here we want you to be up to something in life and hungry to make a difference.  Indeed, we want the kind of people who would do this kind of work for free if they could afford to (and we take pride in offering competitive wages).  We believe its a privilege to get the opportunity to introduce young people to outdoor skills and adventure.  Our instructor team is expected to develop themselves as guides and mentors for our participants while also developing strong working relationships with co instructors.  Our work requires instructors to be diplomatic, charismatic, competent, empathic, effective and creative and we believe it provides opportunities to test yourself every day in each of these arenas.  We are looking for instructors to share in being responsible for building a strong culture and elevate the standards for all of us here, including competency and character.

We believe in Character and Integrity.  We want edgy yet wholesome folks who take pride in being responsible, disciplined, kind and reliable on good days and bad.  Our team believes in rights and responsibilities with an emphasis on responsibilities.  We believe that the 'sacrifices' we make in the work we do will ultimately have the largest dividends.  As a result our instructor team often makes things happen for our students that are rare in the industry we work in.

Many, if not most, of our programs have been the brainchild of or inspired by the initiative and talent of individual instructors whether that be our fishing and archery camps or our expansion to new towns and states.  Our instructors are self sufficient, autonomous and adventurous OR they are committed to developing themselves in these ways.  The work is challenging and rewarding and instructors are at the same time highly independent and part of a larger culture.

We provide training in instruction approach, group and behavior management and technical outdoor skills.  Summer Camp instructors work largely autonomously and with limited supervision while Outdoor School Instructors work as a team and must be able to adapt for the sake of the larger group/program.  All instructors are on a first name basis with the founder/owner and know they can call him directly any day of the week.

What to expect:

  • In person, video based and subsidized training opportunities year round including

    • 5-8 day intensive Summer Instructor Training

    • Twice yearly Outdoor School Team Trainings

    • Quarterly Wilderschool Team Trainings locally

  • A culture and community of like minded (and not always like minded) instructors and administrators with a shared goal of impacting the world through nature based education

  • Work opportunities in a variety of locations and with a variety of age groups.  Some instructors travel extensively and some work closer to home

  • We operate outdoors in public domains where we  encounter and engage the public or school groups daily

  • Online and teaching resources to support instructors  delivery of programs

  • We are non ideological/political (as much as we can be) - we are focused on outdoor education and nature connection

  • Competitive Wages
